The Fastest Growing Private Companies list ranks Orange County-based companies with rapid sales revenue growth from June 2015 through June 2017 and is separated into three categories—Small, Midsize, and Large—with a total of 157 companies making the combined lists.

Companies in the "Small" category needed a minimum revenue of $300,000 for the 12 months through June 2015 and a minimum of 15 percent revenue growth for the two-year period. According to the outlet's editor, the companies ranked in the 2017 lists grew sales by a combined 90 percent versus last year's 66 percent.
In addition to the Fastest Growing Private Companies List, SmartBug Media was ranked in the Inc. 5000 list, in the top 21 percent, with a three-year revenue growth of over 391 percent.
